People sometimes look askance at me when I declare how much I like the work of this artist and I can, to a degree see why. There is an explicit emotional brutality that can be off-putting and many of his images are disturbing to say the least and the way in which the ink and paint is applied to the paper is a part of that and remarkably so. This relatively small but very well-curated exhibition shows him off at his best, revealing all aspects of the human figure and human experience. The two things that I was most aware of was, firstly, the sheer volume of his output, given his very early death (the Spanish Flu pandemic!) and secondly, and related to this, how much of his work was, although unfinished or in some cases barely begun, what was there was as artistically satisfying as any fully finalised product. There is a passionate energy and urgency in every single line and mark on the paper which I found very exciting.
