Barbie: The Exhibition. Design Museum London. Sept 21st 2024

This was a marvelous little exhibition. Like Barbie herself, it was small, perfectly formed (at least within the assumptions and limitations of the world in which they exist). It gave a comprehensive view of the growth of the doll/phenomenon. The skill and advances in technology required to make her and her ‘infinite variety’ of costumes were some of the most intriguing parts of the exhibition – well, celebration, tbh. It was very, and suitably child-friendly as while more serious issues were acknowledged (views of women and their role in society/female body shapes/societal pressures and expectations) these were not a major element although, for me, I would have welcomed more and greater depth in this area. The varieties and significances of Ken were shown and acknowledged, but not explored (earring Ken and his significance …?).

But it was, rightly, very and enjoyably child-friendly (and Mattel-friendly too, of course as I suspect that without their agreement the exhibition would not have taken place).
