Beneath The Surface & Classical Edinburgh City Art Centre, Edinburgh.

This was a little gem of a place to which I have not been before. It was a joy too, to come to a place that clearly supported young artists and yet was free.
Beneath the Surface was a small but very elegantly laid out and peaceful exhibition showcasing some of the most recent abstract art from some of its main practictioners. It was utterly minimalist in style, content and layout and each artwork had plenty of space in which to make its impact. I loved the sense of depth that was achieved through the techniques of the painters and there was a consistent appreciation shown by them all of the utter beauty of simplicity.
My favourite was the Collection of Contained Boxes where cast glass boxes each contained a glowing egg-shaped object in three materials – bone china, burnished gold and burnished platinum. It was exquisite to look at and it raised questions of how objects per se can become art depending on what is done with them and how they are displayed. I would love to have been able to afford it!
