The space in which this exhibition was mounted was almost as impressive as the contents! It certainly showcased the work wonderfully and the spacious starkness of the area perfectly match the wonderful photographs. For the first time, I felt that I truly appreciated the virtues and characteristics of black and white photographs. And the use of shadow and different levels of darkness.
However, the deliberate use of ‘ordinary’, reflective glass was, while slightly over-smartly justified by a remark from the artist – seeing one’s own reflection and engaging more personally with the image etc. etc. – while clever seemed a little disingenuous. I wanted to see the photographic image in all its clever purity, not with additional reflections added to it.
But a marvelous experience.
