The Very Best - Varfok 30. Varfok Gallery Budapest, Jan 14th 2021

It was a real pleasure to get out and go to a new, actual living arts event; I have lost count of how long it has been! This was a celebration of 30 years of the Varfok with a characteristically eclectic selection of stimulating work on a great variety of scales, and media.

I think the best I can do is just list the art that I particularly enjoyed (sorry, almost all surnames only) and let future visitors seek these (or the artists) out when they go to the gallery. But before that, mention of this: a wall of small pieces in a greatvariety of styles and mediums which, in a way, gave a wonderful picture of the range of work that this gallery promotes and showcases.

Gilot: Gordian Knot 5. Springwater-freshness simplicity

Ujhazi: Carpet. Spectacular large-scale panelled piece that marvellously conveyed joy

Aatoth: Heart Affairs. Spoke clearly without the adjacent written commentary.

M. Orr: Mirror, Mirror… Super ‘Rokeby Venus’ homage/recreation that added his characteristic, and enjoyably disconcerting, surreal element

A.Nemes: Major rising star with a superb portrait that is both delicate and powerful.

Herbst: Portrait. Deeply creeping portrait on half of a steel sphere

Gyorffy: ‘Facefuck’ series. Definitely the most disturbing. Melting ceramic.

And much else.

Kincso Bede: Three Colours I know in this World; Black-White Magic. TOBE gallery Between March and May 2021...
