Zombie: Photography TOBE Gallery Budapest

A most stimulating exhibition in a space that seems to constantly surprise and intrigue. The creative use of superimposition on older photographs to comment on their previous status and perception by others is intriguing and the consequent distorted images (hence the zombie idea I suppose) recalled the agonized figures of Francis Bacon but here done in a fascinating combination of media.

I thought there were two very striking images – one of HM the Queen which managed to convey both power and pain and, my favourite, Immortels which was used in much of the publicity for the show. There was a poignancy about this image for me shown by the position of the model’s head and the addition of smears of red on the eyes and face produced and very uniquely powerful effect.

A super show which I would encourage all to see.
