Glorious Exploits. Ferdia Lennon
A superb and powerful work; even as I was nearing end II was already disappointed that experience of reading is soon going to be over!
It’s a marvelously, original rich and multi-layered and very well and clearly (non-pretentiously) written. Much was written about the ‘Irish’ aspect of the style and story-telling but I was not really aware of that
It’s an immediately ngaging story about many ideas and on many levels; friendship between two close friends (Lampo/narrator and Gelon) in grim circumstances. The magic of putting on theatre and how it affects (positively) all those involved. It is very important for Athenian prisoners who are the cast; hope and humanity found in extreme situations – a positive view of humans in terms of what the two central characters achieve
It also shows what’s important to people, viz. love and play production – the two main but almost equally important differing passions of the two central characters)
There’s also a vivid sense of place too and there is a wonderfully powerful and emotional end; quite magnificent and remarkable.
