Tobias Woolf: Old School

Tobias Woolf: Old School

Promising. Halfway through. Set in preppy USA school. Slight but pungent anti-Semitic streak intriguing; always there, sometimes noticed...

Yes. Much enjoyed this. Very elegantly written and the elegant style matched the preppy school environment...from the masters whose social standing was always, implicitly and explicitly below that of their charges to the affectionate but clear-eyed picture of young people on their way to being their definition of men, style and content are beautifully matched. The pretensions of the literary set are seen in both affectionate and satirical terms. Finally though it was less about the pupils but the staff which was an interesting last few chapters twist.

It's also a portrait of a young writer ( would the term Bildungsroman be correct or is that more general term referring to growing up in general?)
