Waco: American Apocalypse. Grimly fascinating but finally unsatisfying account of the infamous siege.

Rather disappointing. The talking heads of those who took part, both in and out of the compound and the sense, or lack of it, that they made of their lives and the events they took part in were most interesting. Perhaps the most grimly fascinating was one female cult member who clearly was still an absolute believer. Very chilling. However, in the final episode with its apocalyptic ending I would have liked further assessment, discussion and some sort of summing up of those events and the outcome – not to mention its impact. The sole element of this was the brief mention of Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma bombing. But I had the strong sense that this was only mentioned as there was a clear and unambiguous link between the two events with the bomber and McVeigh’s appearance towards the end of the siege.

There was clearly a considerable, and, at the end, catastrophic lack of communication between the two emphatically contradictory organizations who were both involved. The negotiators whose aim was a peaceful, non-fatal conclusion and the hostage rescue team whose far more aggressive approach was the opposite of negotiators. And the political implications were barely mentioned nd neither were any connections, contemporary or current made between recent beliefs and events and those that happened at Waco. That in itself would be worthy of a series I think.

An opportunity lost, I fear.

Money Shot: The Pornhub Story: Such a dull programme that this line is my sole response.

A Bigger Splash. Fascinating, original and eye-opening docu-drama that gives a vivid picture of a segment of UK artistic world.
