Deadwind. Series 1. Helsinki-set Scandi-noir that is both measured and thrilling.

An excellent and gripping piece of work. I usually find that more than 8 episodes of one story is enough but hwre the 12 was just what was needed as the story slowly and thoughtfully unfolded.

The setting of Helsinki was first rate - and the picture it gave of the country was fascinating - the standard of living seemed remarkably high with the apartments being particularly stunning, for all characters. Is it really like that in Finland? And the appearances of the SWAT teams were very dramatically impressive

The story was less dark and lurid than Scandi-noir often is, but the interplay of business, interpersonal relationships, familial and otherwise was masterly. For the central detective there was also the coming to terms with a recent grievious loss and the effect upon her family. which was also well paralleled with a similar situation in a major focus of her investigation. The multiple pressures upon her (her work, her personal emotional well-being, her children) were richly and powerfully dealt with. The relationship between the two main detectives, one moved from financial crime to murder investigations was particularly fascinating but I always had the feeling that there was more of a back story to Sakari Nurmi than was let on - and a few subtle hints were given. At times I wondered if he was crooked… Perhaps this will be an aspect developed in a second series if there is one . The ending was very poignant though - no further comment on that as too much would be given away.

Well worth the time.
