Disappointing. A super premise – a rediscovered 80’s game that affects and seeps into real life. The central characters, particularly Iola Evans as the lead, are well drawn and there is a real sense, initially, of involvement in her traumatized life (death of younger brother when in her care, mother’s subsequent drug problems) and her relationship with retro computer geek Asa Butterfield. But his life/background are very superficially filled in and as the film approaches its climax, the logic and plotting become muddled and unclear leaving us at the end with a rather dissatisfied feeling – or for me, at least.
