The Deliverance: Decently above-average 'demonic possession' story.

This was an well above-average horror film as it was more than mere horror with an excellent awareness of ordinary, difficult lives of the protagonists – a struggling, African-American single mother with her offspring and her mother, a recovering/recovered addict who has found God. This performance, by the superb Glenn Close (WHY has she not yet won an Oscar??!!) was the highlight of the film; she was riveting every time she was on screen.

Once the more traditional horror elements kicked in (commendably, only in the final section) the film became less involving and I felt that the ending was both slightly rushed and a little ‘pat’ – although as it was, apparently ‘based on’ real events, I suppose options were limited.

An enjoyable view and a reminder that if Lee Daniels is director (and or writer) then the film is likely worth a watch.

Carry-On: Gripping airport-set thriller that is a fair bit more than a seasonal Die Hard tribute.

The Zone of Interest. Remarkably powerfully understated exploration of the inexplicable.
