The Good Liar: Gripping and masterfully performed slow-burn thriller.

A very entertaining piece particularly for the play between Mirren and Mckellen. They work wonderfully well together each edging around the other and believing that it is they who have the upper hand – and moment to moment we absolutely believe both of them.

The opening credit sequence was very good as it quickly and smartly established the two characters with many hints about their real natures, deception being central to them both. The cinematography was subtly effective too with occasional, but highly effective use of slightly exaggerated lighting to give us hints about their characters and real feelings, particularly McKellen’s.

It was a very satisfying and (largely) well-plotted film with likely plausibility as these two danced their way around each other. And the title was not as obviously directed at one character as one might first think.

Violent Night. 'It's a Christmas movie, but not as we know it, Jim.'

Nocturnal Animals. Powerfully and movingly thoughtful psychological drama.
