The White Tiger. Enormously engaging and gripping drama.

A rather marvellous film – both entertaining and thought-provoking that gives a really eye-opening and (I think) authentic picture of modern India with a fascinating central protagonist who is intriguingly flawed and by no means the brave, admirable and near-heroic figure that he seems to be in the first part of the film.

The story is unfolded at an excellent pace – slow enough to allow for character and mood development but not so slow as to be dramatically turgid.

All performances are first-rate and although it is not a cinematically striking/original film, it is filmed ina  way that helps to tell the story in the best way – and you can’t really ask much more than that. Anything more flashy and complicated would have detracted from the story and the characters who are the main and most important aspects of the film.

Contagion: Deeply strange and disturbing seeing this post-COVID when the film was made in 2011

Downsizing: Potentially intriguing but did not really seem to know which direction it was heading.
