Pat Barker: The Regeneration Trilogy; Regeneration, The Eye in the Door & The Ghost Door

I am going to say very little about these as I feel they are likely to be well known by anyone who reads this. What must be stressed is the stunning picture that they give of the First World War, through the eyes of characters both known/historical and the utterly unknown. Each of course, of vital importance.

Barker is wonderful at both evoking physical place and the feel of First World War battle scenarios as well as the most touching and powerful depiction of feelings and relationships -and it is this combination of two such disparate elements yet centrally human elements, that make these books so stunningly powerful.

So nothing else to say other than…read!
