El Anatsui. Turbine Hall Installation. Tate Modern. London Dec 29th 2023

Creations/installations for this space have the slightly odd characteristic in that the first/major/sometimes only reaction is a gasp of amazement at the sheer scale of what is before us. I think this is just as valid a response as the ability to then think and talk in detail about what it evokes/suggests/makes us think about, but even if this does not happen, I think that first response is perfectly good and valid one. That was how I felt about this installation: the sheer scale and hard physical work that had gone in to the creation.

I particularly liked the way that one arrangement of filigree gold shapes, suspended in mid-air changed in appearance and apparent solidity, as you moved around them, from being several flat shapes to becoming a rounded sphere. A very clever and effective technique.
