As ever, a very well-curated show that gave a vivid picture of the remarkable international success that M had – du in no small way to his agent who promoted his works and showed them in a way that would make modern-day influencers very envious.

His most famous, massive historical and religious paintings were, for me, somewhat less interesting than some of the smaller items – although one was in awe of their sheer size, particularly the famous Arpad one. There was a superb small picture right at the start (which I sadly did not picture) of a yawning apprentice which was marvelously energetic and vivid as well as a marvelous late painting (Dusty Road) that vividly recalled Turner. I also much liked his pastoral images (which he apparently painted solely for his own pleasure)…and it showed. They did not seem to be trying too hard which many of the larger canvases definitely suggested.
