This was a magical exhibition and marvellously curated. I do like the way that such shows start with a triple timeline – the artist’s life, contemporary world events (and often including/focusing on other artists) and Hungarian events. It’s always illuminating, particularly for realising what is happening, particularly in the arts world, during one artist’s life.
The size of the show was just right and gave a marvellously clear idea of his artistic progress – and it was particularly lovely to see the film of the old Renoir. I must admit I preferred some of his earlier work, particularly the final (his last) piece that concluded the show. It seemed to me that his fabled and magical grasp of glowing skin was becoming almost too intense.
Kudos to the curators and all who made it possible.
