With a Varfok gallery opening, life is definitely not only getting good but getting back to near-normal! The two artists selected are both distinctivly and uniquely stylish. I have alwasy loved two aspects of Matte O’s work in paticular - the mixture of almost photo-realistic images along with intriguing abstract symbols and his mixing of textures. It was only after attending this show and speaking directly to him for the first time that I had illumination as to what made those two visual aspects of his work so different - viz the use of oils and acrylics, the former giving a wonderful three-dimensional solidity to the image (the still lifes are particularly powerful in this respect as is his painting of the nude male body) while the surreal combination of images allows for much creative responsiveness to the work.
Gaal’s work, which I have only just discovered, intrigues with its use of many different materials which are often only apparent upon close exaination of the canvas - the materials on the bodies is paticularly effective..
A super show - and perhaos one day I will be able to own an original by one or both artists…
