Jeannette Winterson: Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit
Fascinating. Strange category. Assumed and for much of it reads like autobiography but then get fables and stories which seem to connect symbolically with events described. Not sure how well this works..and with each chapter heading taken from Old Testament book feel that may have missed much with many of them although for a few, an easy and simple connecting could be made.
There's a great sweetness about the mother daughter relationship depicted. I had sensed from reading about the work that it was far darker and more bizarre a relationship but actually not so and by the end they both seemed to have reached a degree of emotional equilibrium with each other. Not in every area though.
Style quietly understated which perhaps helped to well convey the relationship.
Thanks to Alison Bird for getting the author on my radar with her Xmas gift..which will go back to with new eyes after reading this.
