A Ghibli gem but not your usual type ( if there is a type). This is a completely adult film in terms of its ideas and themes, in the way that 45 Years is...a mature exploration of the life and feelings of an adult person, here an us,arrived 27 year old who goes on a vacation to the countryside bit mentally accompanied by her Grade 5 self which mLes and a lows her to evaluate her life the choices that she has made so far and what choices she is going to make for the future. The colouring is a little more subdued thanks often the case with Ghibli films but not when nature alone is playing an important part; there is one stunning scene of a sunset which is the finest cinematic representation I have seen for a long time. Rightly the colours of the country are more vivid than in the town, or the flashbacks, but that is only dramatically appropriate. One other lovely subtle cinematic detail I noticed was how during the flashback sequences the image did not go completely to the edge of the frame. What was central and the main dramatic focus was as vivid and detailed as all other scenes but the edges often faded away or were left blank, ref
Eating I suppose the fact that it was a ,Emory Md so not every detail would be there...only the parts that were important and remembered by the character concerned. In the present day of course, all was complete. I have never noticed this before, in any sort of film. Has anyone else?
A sweetly satisfying ending too; I liked the way that all of this took place in the latter partner the end titles.
Very fine.
