Hannah Gadsby; Nanette. Superbly powerful and original

I didn’t originally intend to watch all this; I have seen clips from it and been much amused (the focus, naturally on the ‘comic’ )side but once I had started, was enthralled. There was a masterly move from the lighter traditional comic early part to the much darker and intimately personal latter part and ending.

there was a good dramatic structure too, using the idea that she really needed to give up comedy - the reasons for which became quite painfully apparent as she continued - but with some fantastic laughs along the way which, naturally, made the darker material even more effective.

Critics would say that this is just a rather self-indulgent example of psycho-comedy where the performer uses the stage as a means of exploring their own issues and problems - well, it was that and was no less the effective for that. In many areas it was very illuminating - sometimes distressingly so.

An excellent piece of theatre.
