This was a rather lovely, sweet and touching documentary. Very often pop star bios focus on the excesses/conflicts and the like that often accompany such stories but here it was endearingly celebratory without being glutinous and uncritical.
The two boys were really string and lifelong friends and although George Michael’s issues with his sexuality were touched on but in a thoughtful way, showing how he became trapped by the success and image that they both worked for. Although the sex symbol aspect once they truly hit them big time was not, I felt, something that they sought – rather it was an incidental result of that success.
Marvelous use was made of very extensive contemporary footage which allowed the boys to speak in their own terms and words – and it was fascinating to see them react and respond to the increasing success and adulation. And when they decided to call it a day, it seemed to be done in a really mutually supportive and positive way – what both of them, for different reasons, wanted at that stage. All very refreshing.
