Well, this new chapter was as gripping as the previous 2. There was an excellent balance, as before, between the crime story strand and the story of Marcella and her troubles. Towards the end it was very effective the way that there were numerous references back to the previous series which made convincing dramatic sense and were not used clumsily or heavy-handedly. The story of Marcella’s mental issues was easily one that could have become luridly impossible, but this was not the case here - although there were a few moments when that seemed it might be the case, particularly when she had clear conversations with her two selves.
The Maguire crime family under the fearsome matriach played with wonderful understatement by Amanda Burton were superbly and grimly entertaining.
However, the blood-soaked finale did, almost, veer into parody with the a settling of scores that was both luridly operatic AND redolent of the finale of a Jacobean revenge tragedy - with which some parallels could be drawn, I think.
The final scene was intriguing - is there going to be another series - the possibility was certainly allowed for.
