Suburra. Grippingly flamboyant picture of a spectacularly corrupt and decadent society.

I am writing this only after seeing the final series so reference to the first two will be brief - very brief. It was a superb series, wonderfully evocative of a fascinatingly corrupt society, done with great visual flair and with a whole range of remarkably charismatic performances. It was not afraid to dispose of key characters - sometimes quite early on, which gave it the sense of gritty realism that was one of its strongest characteristics.

It was fascinating how remarkably the settings were - indifferent little cafes, run-down beach-fronts and a number of private houses (and the Vatican - the church did NOT come well out of this) of which Spadino’s Sinti mansion was probably the most visually spectacular (like his dress sense; you don’t often see a character who makes an all-Versace outfit look understated). Likewise, many of the most powerful people, most notably Samurai, were so ordinary looking in appearance and manner as to risk the danger of seeming boring and worth overlooking - which would, of course, be VERY unwise.

A good and vivid soundtrack was used as well which greatly helped the mood and atmosphere as did the very high-quality night filming when much of the most significant action happens.

So a wonderfully gripping series - so good that I can easily see myself returning to it in a few year’s time which is always the sign of a really impressive series - it was the same with the UK Queer as Folk.

The End of the F*****g World: Series 1 and 2: Series 1 a vividly faithful version of the graphic novel, Series 2 a somewhat less successful continuation.
