This was rather more thoughtful and subdued than I was expecting - although there was one very enjoyably lurid scene at the private club for closeted aristocratoc gay men. The visuals were marvellous - early 20thC monied Mexico in terms of clothes and interiors looked richly magnificent.
There was excellent use of silence in the film - virtually no music and the director was not afraid for silence to last for dramatic effect but it was never melodramatic, helped by the subtle acting - not like a Mexican soap opera with shrieks and rolling eyes - or Elite for that matter.
The protrayal of the central character was very sympathetic - but sympathy was also allowed for his wife. The final scene with them at breakfast was very powerful with the only sound being the crisp crackle of the pastries that the wife was eating while Ignacio processed what had happened to his lover. No happy ending of course but a quietly effectiove drama nevertheless.
