There was rather more to this than I thought there would be when I first looked at it. The surface story - outsider gets involved with struggling gay club and ‘saves’ it and some members - was not really the true focus - instead it was people coming to terms with a loved lost one and being able to carry on with their lives that was the main dramatic and emotional thrust of the piece as well as developing self-awareness and maturity for a good number of characters. The various relationships that began, developed and, in at least one case I think, ended in the course of the film were very well dovetailed together and only towards the end did one such resolution seem to be a bit rushed and could have done with more time being given to it and its ramifications.
The setting was lovely - and unusual, giving a charming sense of a supportive and pretty self-contained community who all looked out for each other. It managed to avoid sentimentality which would have been very easy not to do, given the nature of the story.
A rather lovely way to spend a relaxing evening.
