The opening sequence was, technically, a very clichéd one. The high angle Dutch shots/the ‘sinister’ tinkling piano music/a storm/ pools of light – every cliché was there. I did wonder if this boded badly for the rest of the film; in fact, it did not and virtually the entire sequence was repeated at the very end to clearly show what the solution to the mystery was. The fact that it was not unexpected did not detract from the effectiveness of the film however.
The film progressed well after this opening with an effectively gradual building of tension and the slow reveal of the truth. It brought home, as an incidental, how very dependent patients who need intensive care in a hospital or facility are on the staff and how vitally important and powerful they are.
The film was a decent example of the ‘unreliable narrator’ or, if not the actual narrator, the central figure on whom we were guided to believe, follow and sympathize/empathize with. And this made the ending quite a lot more powerful than it might seem from a mere plot summary.
A decent way to spend an evening.
