A wonderfully joyous experience; I even forgot about the famous NT version with Mackenzie/Covington/Charleson et al. The immersive experience was a marvelous as it was for MND a year or so ago and the control of the crowd was masterfully unobtrusive and engaging at the same time. There was the usual imaginative use of space and levels that characterizes this productions and @JackCullen and I were in awe at the degree of planning and organization that must have been needed for everything to have moved (literally and metaphorically) so smoothly and effectively.
Performances were superb, particularly Adelaide who had a superb voice and presence which rather put others in the shade. Sky Masterson was very elegantly seductive – and we loved the Havana scene, this time set in a gay club. Sometimes this scene can seem dramatically unnecessary and it slows down the action but this was not the case here. The orchestra was excellent and, mercifully, not over-amped.
And I was again in awe at the skill of the lyricists - to be able to create and smart, funny, dramatically appropriate rhyming song that incorporates information from a medical/health publication is really quite something. I don’t think even Sondheim did something like that!
