This was one of the (frankly few) artistic highlights of Canberra. The garden was magically laid out, in wooded and shrubbed areas with winding paths which allowed one to stumble across fascinating and varied creations – and with a fair number of Brits; Moore, Emin, Gormley… Some had a more active element e.g. movement, which was great fun although some more interactive features were not working – a mist spray for one was not operative although the piece did ‘work.’ without that. This layout was an excellent example of how to ‘curate’ a sculpture garden to constantly engage the viewer, in sharp contrast to the Pt Leo example. A lovely time – but the fantastic creation by James Turrell ‘Within Without’ described as a ‘skyspace’, which recalled the Rothko Chapel in Houston was the highlight. It was wonderfully peaceful and brilliantly and powerfully combined indoors and outdoors, sky and land. A fantastic creation. For this, and for some other pictures, go to the Facebook postings on Feb 21sth; there are better and immediate responses to this last feature than I have given here.
