Neil Gaiman: The ocean at the end of the lane

Another piece of wonderfully weird magic from the ever-unpredictable N.G! Love the way he weaves the utterly mundane and recognisable with the utterly magical and unpredictable. Always a joy. Number of comments mentioned how evocatice and effective it was as the depiction of the world ( this and all others...read the book to understand this comment! ) through the eyes of a 7-year old but TBH this did not come through strongly for me. Seemed to have a more adult sensibility and set of responses. Not a flaw at all but thought interesting what others saw that I failed to see ( as it was not there)

There was some superbly vivid writing about food. ..traditional English recipes and the description of the appearance and the eating sensations that followed were superb . Last time I read food descriptions that vivid was in Toast by Nigel Slater.
