Good morning, Veronica: Series 1. Thoughtful and powerful drama that at the very end collapses into telenovela melodrama

For the majority of its 8 episodes (an appropriate number as far as story and character development was concerned), this was a very thought-provoking and involving thriller. It centered on an appallingly abusive married relationship, characterized by extremes of mental and physical cruelty, one of the worst aspects of which was the way the psychotic husband drew his wife into his horrors and convinced her that she was the cause and fault of these. It seemed to me that the way this relationship was depicted was remarkably intelligent and knowledgeable and it was almost of documentary power with its levels of knowledgeable information.

However, as the climax approached, the net drew in around the abuser, this situation was tied in with other more predictable tropes which had been there from the start but which were of minor importance as the main plot focus unfolded. Now these became much more central – the driven professional wife with a gulf appearing between her and her husband and children, the hints of a possible office romance, unresolved trauma about the circumstances of her parents’ demise and the appearance of a massive, national conspiracy. With this being the new transferred focus in the final episode, the drama became, for me, much less involving. And the emotions (and acting) was getting frankly melodramatic and I felt we were veering towards telenovela territory. The ending, which shrieked ‘it will be continued’, was disappointingly predictable and, to be honest, I do not think I will watch the second, follow-on series as the premise has changed to a much more predictable one.
