Lupin. Part 1. Superbly entertaining and engaging modern version of the eponymous gentleman burglar, Arsene Lupin.

i reckon it’s pretty unusual for the hype and almost universal popularity to be something I am wholly in accord with, but that is the case with the first part of this series, which has everything make it riveting and entertaining viewing without being mindless. The gradual onion-skin of plot layers that are revealed after the initial heist event with which the series began are marvellously done, as is the gradual telling of the back story of the central character. And these elements all fit in beautifully -as neatly and as cleverly as Arsene manages his trickery. This is a marvellous combination of style, plot, substance and character that all fit together perfectly and satisfyingly as a three-D puzzle.

Sy, as the title character (characters?) has wonderful charisma and charm and is superbly supported by all others. And it is very satisfying how well written characters are, with more interesting layers than at first one might think - I recall particularly the case of Inspector Dumont.

I cannot wait for the second part - but, along with millions of others, will have to do so.
