Very satisfying to be able to say that the climax of the film trilogy was almost wholly and completely satisfying. The black magic element, (a difficult one to bring in in a convincing manner without being stupidly lurid, was very well done and the expansion from the initial issue - ritual killings of young girls - has been superbly developed - and it has been a natural and plausible development too which is not always the case.
the relationships continue to develop, not least that of the main investigator which gives a very touching and thoughtfully nuanced view of a relationship that is under stress for many reasons - the wife’s work/ the new baby/her relationships with her mother and sisters.. All very well explored and with the characters subtly and convincingly drawn - no cardboard villains here. Even the mother, at the end, had some sympathy - not least as climactic events left some questions hanging - and one distant character (an FBI agent with whom the lead investigator worked and who was an important mentor) provides one of the several unanswered questions that imply some sort of continuation. At the end the sage is NOT wholly completely tied up - but this is not a flaw. The wholly unexpected death of a quite central and very sympathetic character was a very shocking and powerful turn of events - and quite a brutal one to in its unexpectedness and the impact that it had on everyone.
I will be very interested to see if there is any sort of sequel/follow-up/final tying together of all strands - the films are apparently based (closely I believe) on three very successful novels
