Rocketman. Flamboyantly candy-coloured epic musical biography of Elton J

Great fun. I particularly liked the way the film-maker matched the various aspects of John’s story to the visual style - coldly lit, impersonal close-ups when dealing with his parents and family, wildly extravagant OTT musical numbers as he expressed himself. A number of people came out very badly - his parents and John Reid in particular but given his involvement with the film (at a distance it seems, one can assume that he was happy with this.

Egerton was exceptionally fine, both as actor and performer - his performance of the musical numbers was superb and very real - and good to see Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin. The relationship between the two (probably the most important relationship in Elton’s life, husband included) was marvellously depicted.

The use of the songs as markers of the drama was very well done and did not seem forced at all which it could easily have done.

A great fun film to be enjoyed by everyone, not just Elton fans.

Naboer/Next Door. A very dark and disturbed/disturbing psychological thriller

Brother. Edgy and grimly authentic drama with satisfying conclusion
